Don't miss Wilson's biscuits

Following the success of recent soccer tournaments, Babe Ruth Baseball and with a state-of-the-art little league baseball complex on the horizon, we should see an increase of Wilson visitors in upcoming months.

With those people bringing their dollars, along with a need to be fed and entertained, I thought it might help to offer an "Insider's Guide to Wilson for Visiting Out-of-Towners."

While it might not include typical info found in tourism brochures or Chamber of Commerce guides, it's the kind of thing many outsiders might like to know.

We have plenty of restaurants here to suit most tastes, and naming each one would be impossible, but here a few suggestions of what we can offer;

* Hottest coffee -- Bojangle's at Wilson Mall

* Tenderloin biscuit -- Flo's

* Country ham -- Ray's Drive-In

* Fried shrimp -- Parker's Barbecue

* Collards -- Cherry's BBQ

* Best indoor dining atmosphere -- Dick's Hot Dog Stand, featuring photos on the walls.

* Best outdoor dining atmosphere -- Silver Lake Seafood Restaurant, where feeding turtles and ducks is part of the experience

* Chicken livers -- Western Sizzlin

* Milkshake -- Chick fil-A

* Barbecue and hot dogs, two Wilson trademark cuisines, can stand on their own, as can most fast food restaurants and will be left to the individual tastes of visitors.

* Best novelty buffet item -- The whole pig, including ribs, on the buffet at Bill's.

While we're on buffets, again we have plenty to choose from including Bill's, Cherry's, Griff's, Western-Sizzlin, Pizza Inn, Pizza Hut, Golden Corral, Good Taste Buffet and several others.

Actually, "City of All-You-Can Eat Buffets" might be a name for the committee to consider as it searches for a trademark slogan for the city.

* Best entertainment bang for the buck -- Wilson Tobs baseball game and a visit to N.C. Baseball Museum.

* Best free entertainment value -- Feeding the ducks at Toisnot, like several families did during the soccer tournament. Other options include the Wilson Rose Garden and Vollis Simpson's whirligigs.

* Best convenience store -- Space does not allow a complete listing here, but with what seems like several thousand in the area there should be enough to accommodate all.

* Best amusement park-style ride -- Miniature train at Recreation Park.

* Runner-up ride -- (In your car) on Goldsboro Street from Hines Street to Five Points. Vehicles maintaining the posted speed limit for the entire trip will be guaranteed enough nice bumps and bounces.
