Education is her mantra

She has been described by her sister as a motivator and a role model for the current generation.

Dorothy Brunson, 67 years old today, just received her doctorate degree in theology from Manna Bible College.

"It has always been important to me to continue my education," she said. "Education is something nobody can take away from you."

Brunson's sister, Bernice Lewis, who lives in California, credits her sister with being her motivation.

"Dorothy is my motivation and a positive role model for this generation," she said. "She's a living testimony, and (she) shut every door of excuses to what a person can do if they set their mind to gain knowledge."

Born in Wilson, Brunson attended Vick Elementary and Darden High School. Brunson got married and had four daughters and then decided the best way to give them what they needed was to complete her education. So she began attending Wilson Community College, transferred to North Carolina Wesleyan College and then to Shaw University, where she received her bachelor's degree in business administration and corrections in 1979. In 2002, Brunson received her master's degree in pastoral counseling from Shaw before finishing her doctorate this year.

While furthering her education and raising her family, Brunson worked full time as a counselor at the Vocational Rehabilitation Center.

"I helped people who had drug and alcohol problems, people who had been in jail and those suffering from mental illness to get a job or go back to school," she said. "I also assisted them with finding a place to live and helped them get on their feet."

Now that Brunson has retired, she said she will continue to work with people in the community to help make their lives richer.

What a gal! Lord, I love these stories! She is just what we all need to try and be like. Makes my heart just fill with love and pride. Thank you Dorothy , for as we used to say in the 60's for "keeping on trucking". You are an inspiration to us all. PS. 67 is young these days, I have several relatives in their 100's.
