Polls open today for runoffs Staff and wire report North Carolina voters headed to the polls today to choose a Democratic challenger to Republican Labor Commissioner Cherie Berry. Today's runoff between Mary Fant Donnan and John Brooks is the only statewide race on the ballot. Donnan finished first in the four-person party primary May 6 but failed to get the more than 40 percent of the vote required to avoid a runoff. The winner takes on Berry in November. While Democratic voters in Wilson County only have the statewide race to cast a ballot in, some voters in Greene and Wayne counties will have a second choice to make. Also being decided today is the Democratic nominee in the N.C. Senate's 5th district, which includes all of Greene County and about half of Wayne. Six Democrats ran this spring to replace long-time legislator, N.C. Sen. John Kerr of Goldsboro, and the two remaining are Snow Hill Mayor Don Davis and Kathy Taft of Greenville, a member of the N.C. Board of Education. The winner will face Republican Louis Pate of Mount Olive, now a N.C. House member, in the fall. Polls are open statewide until 7:30 p.m.
