11-year-old boy's letter carries powerful message By Heather Wilkerson | Daily Times Staff Writer Children have been known to do some pretty amazing things. An example landed on my desk about a week or so ago. An 11-year-old boy wrote a letter to thank the American Legion for allowing him to lend a hand to the group on Memorial Day. The boy essentially thanked them for putting him to work and asked to help again next year! Imagine that! Lannis Watson, the American Legion Post 13 chaplain, brought the letter to the newspaper office, and we thought it was definitely worth publishing. The author is Jordan Ray, son of Curtis and Michelle Ray. "Dear American Legion, I wanted to write you to thank you for the chance to help put out and remove flags from the Veteran's gravesides on Memorial Day weekend. I am a Royal Ranger with Outpost 147 at Wilson First Pentecostal Holiness Church. I have had the honor of helping my Outpost work on this important project for the past six years. Before that, I never really understood the sacrifice so many brave Americans like yourselves have made. I think that is what I want to thank you for the most. My commander has stopped to show us the graves of young men who died in wars. Putting American flags at these graves really shows us the true meaning of Memorial Day. This is something I am very proud and honored to help do and I hope you will keep letting us help you with this task for many years to come. Thank you too for the many cookouts and Flag Day celebrations you have invited us to. I really love the watermelon. Again, I want to thank you for all you have done to defend our country and show us what a true hero looks like. May God bless you all." The scene appears every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
