N.C. senator works to modify teacher leave By Matt Shaw | Daily Times Staff Writer One of Wilson County's legislators has worked for a small change in state law intended to help teachers. N.C. Sen. A.B. Swindell has assisted N.C. Rep. Tricia Ann Cotham of Mecklenburg County with a bill that would basically allow teachers to keep up to $100 a year of their own money. As Swindell explained recently, teachers are allowed to earn up to two days of personal leave a year and can carry up to a maximum of five days. When teachers take that leave now, they are required to pay $50 per day for a substitute teacher, regardless of whether school is in session, Swindell said. Cotham's bill would allow teachers to take that leave without penalty if the schools do not need to hire substitutes. "It's not a lot of money, but it's important to teachers," Swindell said. The bill is still pending. If it passes, the 2008-09 budget will include $300,000 to reimburse school districts.
