Nash Central band plays in Washington, D.C.

Nash Central High School's band was one of 12 bands from across the country chosen to play in Washington, D.C., during a weekend of performances celebrating our national anthem and the importance of music education.

The students joined over 1,000 students from across the country in singing "The Star Spangled Banner" at the Ulysses S. Grant Memorial near the U.S. Capitol building. The band later played the national anthem in front of the Jefferson Memorial.

Created by MENC: The National Association for Music Education, the "National Anthem Project: Restoring America's Voice" is celebrating a national education initiative to re-teach Americans "The Star Spangled Banner" and the value of learning the music of our American heritage.

Nash Central's band was selected to participate after Leo Nieves, the band's director, submitted video footage of the jazz and concert bands to event organizers.

While in Washington, the students visited many national tourist attractions, including the Museum of Natural History, the Smithsonian Institute, the Washington Monument, Jefferson Memorial and White House. Previously, the band has performed at Universal Studios in Orlando, Fla., as well as Disney World.
