Nash Street open for First Friday concert

Construction crews finished a section of Nash Street in downtown Wilson just in time for the start of the city's annual First Fridays on the Lawn concert series, which begins Friday at 3 p.m.

A section of Nash Street, between Pine and Jackson streets, was previously closed so crews could replace water and sewer lines, as part of a $650,000 road project along Nash Street. The project started at Pine Street and will continue down Nash Street to College Drive. Several side roads will also be included.

"The water and sewer infrastructure is complete between Jackson and Pine on Nash Street," said Bryant Bunn III, city engineer. "I'm going to come back and mill and pave the road, but that's going to be in the fall."

In addition to the First Fridays on the Lawn, the road was opened to accommodate customer traffic for the BB&T drive-thru.

"BB&T wanted the drive-thru available at the first of the month, and there were other factors involved," Bunn said. "I sure wouldn't want to have First Fridays on the Lawn and have half of the road closed."

The Nash Street section, located in front of the BB&T towers and the Wilson County Library, opened to traffic Monday. Crews also stopped their work for the week but will start the project back up on Monday, starting near Jackson Street and moving toward College Drive. Old water and sewer lines will be replaced, as well as some other sidewalk and streetscape improvements.

All of the roads involved in the project will be milled and repaved in the fall, possibly in October, Bunn said.

Setup for the First Fridays on the Lawn series will start today. The event will be held from 3-6:30 p.m. on the Wilson County Library Lawn. First Fridays on the Lawn in August, September and October will be from 5-8 p.m. The earlier time Friday will allow enough time for those interested in seeing fireworks at Fleming Stadium.
