Tourism Board opens treasury at last

I read with great appreciation ... and greater surprise, that our tourism board voted to fund something important that would actually bring in meaningful amounts of visitors with a substantial amount of money demonstrating that this board is not dead.

Many of us have been wondering where the full-on bold and effective effort to attract more visitor traffic was hiding, thought it might be time to contact the coroner to perform an autopsy.

Heretofore the typical Tourism Board action to bring in substantial tourism dollars was to let someone else do all the work then hand over a small symbolic check for the obligatory P.R. photo of handing over a fraction of what the event required/deserved.

But the vote to support the athletic complex (a no-brainer) is a long overdue departure from their signature dawdling, pondering, stalling and timidity. And hats off to the four who had the courage and foresight to see it was time to do something productive with those gathering funds. I suspect it wasn't easy bucking the traditional "we can't do that" mentality. Naturally it was a close vote. You can't expect that everyone in charge of fortifying our tourism effort would be on board to, well, fortify our tourism effort. But at least we know there are four over there who "get it."

To the four who voted "aye," the community applauds your effort. Thank you. To the other three who couldn't see any potential, it may be time to leave, sit on another board and halt progress in some other areas. Tourism around here may finally be stirring.
