Lovett-Askew

Emily Blair Askew and Scott Michael Lovett, both of Chapel Hill, exchanged wedding vows May 17 at First Baptist Church. Dr. Douglas Murray officiated at the 5 p.m. ceremony.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Russell Askew. She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel W. Askew and Thelma L. Barnes, all of Wilson. She graduated from Hunt High School and received a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Philosophy in Toxicology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is a research assistant in the Laboratories for Reproductive Biology and a teaching assistant for the Department of Biology. Mrs. Askew-Lovett was a 2007 recipient of the U.S. Department of Defense Prostate Cancer Pre-Doctoral Training Award.

The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Charles Foote of Hastings, Neb. He is the grandson of Evelyn V. Sage of Wichita, Kan., and Dorothy I. Holloway of Tonica, Ill. He graduated from Gainesville High School in Gainesville, Ga., and received a bachelor’s degree in parks, recreation and tourism management from North Carolina State University. He is an applications support specialist at Empiric Systems.

Escorted by her father, the bride chose for her wedding a white embroidered halter that featured double, peaked empire bands on the elegant A-line gown. A pyramid of embroidery and satin bands encircled the hemline. The pattern was repeated on the chapel-length train. She wore a single layer fingertip-length veil with a white satin ribbon edge created by Nona Fine of St. Louis, Mo.

The bride carried a nosegay of white roses, white tulips and stephanotis adorned with pearls. The bouquet also contained a miniature Bible given to the bride by her paternal grandparents on her first birthday.

Matron of honor was Laura F. Ledford of Morrisville.

Bridesmaids were Heather R. Aycock of Lucama; Alison T. Bailey of Raleigh; Kari L. Fine of Athens, Ga.; Michelle A. Foote of Des Moines, Iowa, sister of the bridegroom; Jessica W. Mayes of Arlington, Va., and L. Angelica Ponguta of Carrboro. They wore black two-piece tissue taffeta gowns with strapless tops decorated with front tuck detail and self-sash back ties.

Honorary bridesmaid was Heather R. Smith of Kenly, cousin of the bride.

Emma Caroline Godwin of Wilson, cousin of the bride, was the flower girl. She wore a sleeveless organza dress in white with a boat neckline and a full, floor length skirt. The waist of the dress was adorned with an organza satin sash decorated with a combination of hand-sewn beads and pearls.

The bridegroom’s father served as best man.

Groomsmen were Donald R. Anderson of Stafford, Va., Kevin D. Atkinson of Raleigh, B. Scott Bailey, Jr. of Raleigh, Matthew D. Ballew of Chapel Hill, Matthew F. Miller of Atlanta, Ga., and Randall W. Robinson of Morrisville.

Honorary groomsman was Kyle P. Mitchell of Cary.

Malpus L. Bradbury, the bride’s great-uncle, read scripture.

Register attendant was Samantha F. Sage of Fort Polk, La., cousin of the bridegroom. Diana M. Sage of Wichita, Kan., aunt of the bridegroom, was program attendant.

Karen Mercer directed the wedding.

Wedding music was provided by organist and pianist Rita Bennett and soloist Gregory Griffin.

Following the ceremony, the bride’s parents hosted a reception at Willow Springs Country Club.

On the eve of the wedding, a rehearsal dinner was given by the bridegroom’s parents at the Wilson Country Club.

Earlier in the day, a bridal luncheon was held at The Legacy in Elm City. Hostess was the mother of the bride.

Since their return from a honeymoon at Bald Head Island, they are living in Chapel Hill.

PRE-NUPTIAL EVENTS

December 2007: An engagement trip to England was a gift from the parents of the bridegroom.

March 8: A bridal shower in Raleigh was hosted by Nona Fine, Kari Fine, Laura Ledford, and Alison Bailey.

April 5: Scott and Alison Bailey, An and Elizabeth Nguyen, and Allen and Phyllis Tew hosted a cocktail party in Raleigh.

April 19: A bridal shower in Wilson was hosted by Rhonda Godwin, cousin of the bride, Heather Smith, cousin of the bride, Thelma Barnes, grandmother of the bride, and Diane Smith, aunt of the bride.

May 3: Angie Ponguta and Laura Ledford hosted a bachelorette party and lingerie shower in Chapel Hill. A bachelor party and golf outing was held in Raleigh. Host was Scott Bailey.
