Swamped

FAYETTEVILLE -- The Fayetteville SwampDogs continued their mastery of the Wilson Tobs in summer collegiate baseball Coastal Plain League action Saturday night in J.P. Riddle Stadium.

Fayetteville broke open a tied game with four runs in the sixth inning to take a 6-2 victory, their fifth in six tries against Wilson this season.

The Tobs sunk to 11-15 and trail South Division leader Florence by eight games. Wilson was off Sunday but concludes the season's first half tonight against the Wilmington Sharks in Fleming Stadium.

The SwampDogs (14-13) rode the effort of starting pitcher Travis Wright for seven innings. The 6-foot-6 Rice University right-hander gave up two runs -- one earned -- on four hits while walking none as he won for the fourth time in five decisions.

The Tobs, who also lost 4-1 to Fayetteville in Fleming on Friday night, scratched Wright for both runs in the second after the hosts took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

Chris Henderson led off the second by reaching on an error on SwampDogs second baseman Dustin Johnson. Cody Hawn doubled in Henderson then scored on a wild pitch after advancing to third base on Jared Richmond's sacrifice bunt.

Left-handed starter Alex Meyer of Georgetown University was unable to hold the slim lead in his Tobs debut.

As in the first inning, Meyer issued back-to-back walks to Conner Crumbliss and Johnson. With two outs, Carter Jurica singled in Crumbliss to tie the score 2-2.

In the sixth inning, Meyer's fifth free pass of the night jumpstarted Fayetteville's rally. With one out, Kevin Hussey drew the base on balls then scored the go-ahead run on Ryan Lowe's two-out single to center field.

Paul Novicki took over for Meyer but gave up singles to Crumbliss and Johnson before giving way to Taylor Miller with the Tobs trailing 4-2.

Miller was greeted by Derrick Lowery's two-run triple to complete the scoring.

Nick Chmielewski and Tony Davis blanked the Tobs for an inning each following Wright's departure after seven innings.

Nick Hogan's two hits paced Wilson which had just 10 hits in the two games against Fayetteville, led by Crumbliss' 2-for-3 showing.

With the SwampDogs not scheduled again until Tuesday in Fayetteville, the Tobs will welcome canines of the four-legged variety tonight for "Bark in the Park Night" in Fleming. Fans are encouraged to bring their dogs -- on leashes -- to the game against Wilmington.

The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

The story on Tobs batboys Austin Ethridge and Jackson Pardue, which ran in the June 26 edition of The Wilson Daily Times, states that Pardue has been with the Tobs for four seasons. Pardue is actually entering his eighth season with the team.
