Teen fatally shot

A 13-year-old Wilson boy was shot in the chest and killed Saturday afternoon around 5 p.m., while he was at his grandmother's residence at 1106 Churchill Ave.

Devonta Carpenter, who lived at 905 Jordan St., was pronounced dead at Wilson Medical Center Saturday evening.

Wilson Police have released few details about the shooting, but Francine Barnes, the boy's mother, said this morning that the shooting was "an accident."

She said she did not want to say anything else about Saturday's incident.

Wilson police said in a press release that they were called to the house on Churchill Avenue just before 5 p.m. Saturday afternoon, about a person being shot.

Police said when investigators arrived, they found a teenage boy suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.

Wilson EMS transported the boy to Wilson Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.

As of this morning, no arrests have been made in the case, but police are still investigating.

"The shooting is still under investigation," Sgt. Jacqui Boykin of the Wilson police department said this morning. "We are not looking for any suspects."

The funeral arrangements are being handled by Hamilton Funeral Home. Arrangements are still being planned at this time.
