Dorothy Collins Newton, of Wilson, died Sunday, June 29, 2008. She was born Dorothy Davis in New Philadelphia, Ohio, on April 14, 1918, to the late Ella Nancy Drucilla Duncan Davis and Walter Raymond Davis.
After getting her Registered Nursing (RN) degree from the Baptist Hospital in Nashville, Tenn., she took part in nursing during World War II. She was married to the late William Henry Collins, who was then serving in the United States Army as an instructor. They later settled in Wilson to raise their family, where she became affectionately known as "Dotchie" by friends and family.
As a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church in Wilson, she was dedicated to serving in many ways. These included singing for the choir for many years, as a dedicated member of the senior adult ministry and co-leader of the First Baptist Church exercise group. She was also a volunteer at the Red Cross and the Hope Station, assisting the elderly and the homeless. She was a previous member of the Wilson Women's Club. While primarily a homemaker, she rekindled her career later in life with the Wilson County Health Department, where she engaged in home health nursing.
She can most be remembered for her passion for her family, her church, and her love of dogs. Her previous dog, "Gringo," served then Atlantic Christian College (AC, now Barton College) as its mascot for many years. She was also known for her deep appreciation for the gardening of flowers, for music, the arts and "doing for others."
Her twin sister, Doris Davis Johnson; sisters, Sara Davis Rose and Jane Davis Weed; and brother, Harry Clyde Davis, precede her in death. Deeply committed to her family, she is survived by two other sisters, Mary Davis Carroll and Evelyn Davis Hoff; and Bessie Davis, her sister-in-law. She will also be greatly missed by many nieces, nephews and grandnieces and nephews. Survived also by her daughter, Ruffles Collins Clement and husband, Bill, of Southern Pines; grandchildren, Shannon Clement Wolf and husband, Jake, transitioning to Raleigh from New York and Baxter Lee Clement, of Southern Pines; her son Michael Davis Collins and wife, Connie; granddaughter, Heather Michele Collins White and husband, Carter; great-grandchildren, Collins Davis White and Stephen Carter Herring White; and grandchildren Michael William Collins and wife, Cameron Kirkland Collins, and Christopher Lawrence Collins, all of Wilson.
Services and celebration of her life will be held graveside on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Thomas-Yelverton at Evergreen Memorial Park on Nash Street in Wilson, where her ashes will be buried beside her beloved Bill Collins. The family welcomes friends and family at home, 1403 W. Nash St. immediately following the service.
Memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church of Wilson on Nash Street, For the Love of Dogs or charity of ones choice.
