Tobs' win streak at 4 with 6-3 defeat of Fayetteville

FAYETTEVILLE -- The Wilson Tobs are officially on a roll.

The Tobs, leaders of the summer collegiate baseball Coastal Plain League's South Division, defeated the Fayetteville SwampDogs, 6-3, Thursday night in J.P. Riddle Stadium to run their winning streak to a season-high four games.

The fourth-straight win ended a two-year drought for the Tobs, who haven't reeled off four in a row since July 2006.

Wilson is now 3-0 in the second half and pulled to .500 (15-15) for the season.

The Tobs' Nos. 1-4 hitters each recorded two hits and scored at least one run. Wilson has piled up at least eight hits in each of the four victories.

On the mound, Taylor Miller struck out eight over six innings before giving way to Brandon Brinson.

Brinson, a rising senior at Barton College, allowed just one hit over the final three to pick up the win and improve to 2-1.

Mike Nihsen (0-1) took the loss for Fayetteville (0-2 second half, 15-15 overall), allowing six runs on nine hits in 7 1/3 innings.

Brinson hit a batter, balked and walked a pair, but made up for it when Fayetteville threatened in the seventh with the game tied 3-3.

Brinson allowed a one-out triple to Jason King, but quickly escaped the jam by picking him off third and striking out the next batter.

The momentum carried over in the top of the eighth as the Tobs proved they weren't ready for the winning streak to end.

Wilson added another three-spot as Sanders, Henderson and Parks all scored. Parks added his second RBI of the game in the pivotal inning.

The Tobs took a 3-0 lead in the third. Cam Freeman and Nick Hogan led off the inning with singles, and catcher Chris Henderson delivered an RBI double with one out.

Justin Parks grounded to short to drive in Hogan, and Henderson scampered home on a throwing error by the shortstop.

Miller, a right-hander from Appalachian State University, allowed only four hits and one walk, but didn't figure into the decision after Fayetteville scratched out a run in the fourth, then tied the game on Parker Bangs' two-run blast in the sixth.

Wilson hosts the Gastonia Grizzlies tonight in Fleming Stadium at 7:05 and will put on the annual Fourth of July fireworks display after the game. The matchup with the West Division Grizzlies will be the only meeting between the teams this year.
