Wilson Bulldogs win District Four tourney The Wilson County Youth Athletic Association Bulldogs ripped through the Eastern North Carolina Babe Ruth District Four Tournament with strong defense, pitching and hitting. The Bulldogs defeated Greene County on Sunday in the championship game, 16-0 in four innings. Brandon Winstead led the Bulldogs at the plate and on the mound. He went 3 for 4 with a double and triple and pitched a four-inning shutout. He allowed four hits and zero walks while striking out three batters. Bulldog pitchers allowed a total of 11 hits in three district games. Wilson scored eight runs in the top of the first inning to put Greene County away. Walks by Randy Lamm, Gregory Lamm and Markus Tamez and base hits by Rusty Renfrow, Darius Coleman, Bryson Worrell and triples by Winstead and Sean Craig accounted for the eight runs. In the second, Coleman singled and scored on an error. Four more runs followed in the third inning as Winstead had a two run single after Greene County pitchers walked two Bulldog hitters and two more were hit by pitches. Coleman and Worrell drove in runs with sacrifice flies. In the fourth and final inning, base hits by Winstead, Craig, two more walks and an error scored the final runs of the day. On Friday, the Bulldogs defeated the same Greene County team 13-1 in five innings. Coleman went 3 for 3 and Winstead added two hits Gregory Lamm (four innings) and Randy Lamm combined for a one-hit, 11-strikeout performance on the mound for the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs now advance to Sanford on July 10 for the Eastern N.C. State Babe Ruth 10U Tournament. The tournament will be a double elimination event. Saturday Wilson County Bulldogs 8 1 4 3 16 Greene County 0 0 0 0 0 **Four innings due to 10-run rule 8u, 7u Rookie Teams Finish Tournament The WCYAA's 8U and 7U Rookie Babe Ruth Baseball teams finished tournament play this past weekend in the Lee Woodard Elementary School ballfields with losses. The 8Us were defeated by Wayne County North 24-8 on Saturday in the loser's bracket finals. Wayne County North advanced to the championship were they were beaten by Wayne County South 6-2. The 7U team lost to the 8U Wilson County team on Friday night by a 20-3 margin. Wilson 8U were led by David Pipers 4 for 4 showing while Jared Barnes 2 for 3 (home run), Caleb Thorne 2 for 3 (double), Samson Strickland 2 for 3 (double) and Josh Phillips 2 for 2 had big nights at the plate also. Wayne County North was led by Treavis Briggs 3 for 3 (double), Brock Johnson 3 for 4 (double), C.J. Jackson 4 for 4 (two doubles), Wesley case 4 for 4 (two doubles), Noah Frost 3 for 4 (triple) and Drew Barnes 3 for 3. In the Friday night clash between the two Wilson teams, the Wilson County 8Us were led by David Piper (3 for 4), A.J. Hendricks (3 for 4, home run, double), Jarad Barnes (3 for 4 home run, double), Thomas Williford (3 for 3, triple, double and Sammy Overton (3 for 3, triple).
