Mudcats split pair with Suns
Maybin's RBI single in 8th inning the difference in nightcap

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Carolina Mudcats split a doubleheader Wednesday with the host Jacksonville Suns, losing the opener 4-3 but bouncing back with a 3-2 win in eight innings.

The game was a make-up from Monday's rainout.

The Mudcats (8-7) kept within three games of the Double-A Southern League North Division, while Jacksonville (7-8) moved three games back of Mississippi in the South Division.

In game 1, Carolina pitcher Chris Volstad (4-4) allowed two in the Suns' final two at-bats after erasing an early two-run hole, dropping his record to 4-4. He allowed seven hits and two walks while striking out four in six innings.

In the fifth, with the bases loaded an one out, Jacksonville's Shane Justis scored on Jamie Hoffmann's sacrifice fly to tie the game 3-3. The next inning, Russell Mitchell led off with a single, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and single and scored on a fielder's choice to take a 4-3 lead.

In the first inning, the Suns' James Tomlin ripped an RBI double and later scored with two outs in the first on a Mudcats fielding error for a 2-0.

Carolina answered in the third, loading the bases with no outs. Chris Coghlan scored one with a fielder's choice, followed by a Gaby Sanchez single and Lee Mitchell sacrifice fly to lead 3-2.

Eduardo Sierra (4-0) picked up the win, pitching one inning of relief for Jacksonville, and Brent Leach earned his fifth save.

In game 2, with the game tied 2-2, Brett Hayes led off the eighth with a walk, then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, following a groundout, Cameron Maybin singled to center to score Hayes.

After blowing the save in the seventh, allowing a leadoff walk and back-to-back singles, Todd Doolittle (2-1) picked up the win for the Mudcats. Jeff Gogal finished off the eighth for his first save.

Zachary Hammes (2-5) took the loss for the Suns.

John Raynor and Andy Jenkins also had RBIs for Carolina. Raynor scored Grant Psomas on a sacrifice fly in the third, followed in the next inning by an RBI single by Jenkins, scoring Coghlan.

The teams finish their five-game series today -- each team taking two so far. First pitch will be at 7:05 p.m.
