Roger appointed Lady Warriors basketball coach Hunt grad will replace Thomas By Michael Lindsay | Daily Times Staff Writer Quentin Rogers is no stranger to how things work at Hunt High School. So, as first-year girls varsity basketball head coach, he doesn't need any introduction. Rogers, a Wilson native and 1994 Hunt graduate, will take over for Willie Thomas, who recently resigned from the position after three seasons, the school announced Friday. "I'm well aware of the rivalries," Rogers said by phone Friday afternoon. "Anytime two Wilson County teams play, you can throw the records out the window, but we'll play tough against them. "And I'm well aware of the tradition Hunt has and the prestige this job carries. The last few years, girls basketball has been overlooked by football and boys basketball. So, I want to bring a little shine to the girls program." Rogers worked as an assistant coach with Thomas last season during practices. For the previous five years, he coached at Darden Middle School, where he compiled a 49-2 record. "It's always nice to come back home," Hunt Athletic Director Stevie Hinnant said. "I came back home, and there's not another feeling like coaching where you spent four years of high school. "We're excited to have Quentin. He's a graduate of Hunt, and he's shown a lot of interest in helping young people. We liked what he did at the middle school level, he's paid his dues in camp, and we look forward to having him." Vick, who spent the last year teaching at Vick Elementary School, will teach health and physical education at Hunt. He will take over a Lady Warriors squad that went 5-19 last season, ending their season with loss to Southern Wayne in the first round of the 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference tournament. Vick noted that because he's beginning his duties a little late, getting into preseason jamborees has been difficult. But he's already begun work on setting up as many scrimmages as possible and getting the team ready to play his up-tempo style and transition game for the upcoming season. "But we're going to put together a practice schedule, and get the jayvees in the gym too, have them work together and have as many scrimmages as legal to have." mlindsay@wilsontimes.com | 265-7807
